Whether one discusses classical music, light music, fusion, or popular music, the tabla is the supreme and first choice of rhythmic accompaniment. The tabla is a pair of two drums. The big bass drum (shown on the left) is known as the bayan (also known as the dagga or duggi), which contains a body made of copper, nickel, brass, or aluminum. The smaller higher pitched drum (shown on the right) is known as the dayan, which is made of a hard wood like shisham, rosewood, or teak. Both drums contain complex heads (known as puris) that are made of goat skin. Both drums are tunable by either a rawhide strap tension or nut-bolt tension (shown above).
