Tintal is a commonly used tala in North Indian music. Beginners study this tala as it is perfectly symmetrical as far as the divisions are concerned. The distinguishing factor is the third vibhaga, where the baya’s presence is primarily empty. Tintal means “three-claps.” The claps or talis fall on matras 1, 5, and 13.
