Tīntāl is a commonly used tala in North Indian music. Beginners study this tāla as it is perfectly symmetrical as far as the divisions are concerned. The distinguishing factor is the third vibhāg, where the bāya’s presence is primarily empty. Tīntāl means “three-claps.” The claps or tālīs fall on mātrās 1, 5, and 13.
